Autonomous Futures

Project

A distributed network of subject matter experts were in need of a central hub to focus their work on re-imagining humanity's relationship with emerging technologies and the suite of computational systems and tools broadly categorized as “ai.”

The hub of the project is a hierarchical edge bundling visualization, bringing together diverse texts and topics into a single interconnected web.

Team

I was the sole designer and developer supporting researchers, academics, technologists, authors, artists, policy experts, strategists, and advisors.

Texts of the project are pulled from AirTable, where collaborators can define topics and other connections based on different interests.

Process

Work began with several collaborative meetings where the project focus and goals were laid out. During several of these sessions I provided recommendations and training on various tools that could be used by both tech-savy and non-techies alike.

A lo-fi æsthetic was chosen to contrast the often idealized future of technology and keep it grounded in its roots.

A relational dataset was created in AirTable that could be updated without the need to learn coding. This information was then pulled into a static site hosted on GitHub using the AirTable API and D3 to create interactive graphs and archives.

Outcomes

Autonomous Futures is in its infancy but has already attracted the attention of many academics and policy advisors hopinh to steer the conversation around AI and technology in our society.
